The submarine Dumlupınar was a Balao-class submarine that joined the Turkish Navy after World War II.
Delivered from the United States to Türkiye in 1950, this submarine played a significant role in the modernization of the Turkish fleet.
On the night of April 4, 1953, while returning from a NATO exercise,
Dumlupınar collided with the Swedish-flagged cargo ship Naboland off Nara Point in the Dardanelles Strait due to heavy fog and strong currents.
As a result of the impact, the submarine sank rapidly, and 81 heroic sailors were martyred.
Following the tragedy, the final telephone conversations with the crew trapped inside the submarine became historic.
In their last message from beneath the sea, the sailors expressed their devotion and patriotism by saying,
"Long live the homeland!"
Today, the wreck of Dumlupınar lies at a depth of approximately 85 meters in the Dardanelles Strait.
The site is protected by the Turkish Navy and diving teams and is recognized as a martyrs' memorial.
